PROF Julie E. Stewart got the 2017 outstanding member of the legal profession award from the Law society of Zimbabwe on 15 December 2017 at a Walter Kamba Rule of Law lecture and Dinner.  This came as a surprise to her as she had been invited to the function without a warning. In the picture she holds up the award which has since found a home in her office.

The Walter Kamba Rule of Law Lecture and Dinner is an annual event and a brainchild of the Law Society of Zimbabwe in keeping with its mandate and mission which encapsulates commitment to Justice and the Rule of Law. It is also an opportunity for the Law Society to reaffirm its commitment to professional independence, rule of law, separation of powers for effective justice delivery and good governance in the country.

The event is celebrated as close as possible to the 10th of December when the world celebrates the International Human Rights Day. The event is attended by important stakeholders in the justice sector such as the judiciary, National Prosecuting Authority, the Attorney General’s Office and members of the profession. The rule of law lecture is delivered by renowned speakers from the region or beyond.

The guest speaker for the event held on 15 December, 2017 was renowned human rights lawyer, Mrs Beatrice Mtetwa. The event was well attended. The Walter Kamba human rights award is given each year to an outstanding member of the legal profession who would have exhibited consistency in support of the rule of law, liberty, truth and justice.
