Library

As a special collection, the Women’s Law Collection, the library has gradually been developed over the years in the Law Library at UZ from the start of the Women’s Law diploma programmes. Some literature has been bought through the UZ Library budgets, some by NORAD funding, and quite a lot are donations. The library is still very much “under construction” – the collection consists of approx. 4000 volumes, and with approx 25 periodical titles in subscription. In addition, we have an evergrowing collection of grey material, and of course the diploma and masters dissertations in women’s law. The reference collection consists mainly of Law Reports and Statutes from various countries. We also have access to statutes and law reports on CD-ROMs or online.

A variety of topics with women in focus
Our literature is not restricted to law only, we also have a wide selection of books on anthropology and sociology; feminism; development and globalisation; environment; sexuality, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS; human rights; the situation for women and children; governmental documents on gender policy, etc. etc.

The library is visited and used by students and staff from the Law Faculty as well as other UZ faculties, and our Reading Room is a popular place for studying in peace and quiet. The Reading Room has individual booths for 36 persons. The SEARCWL books are registered in the University of Zimbabwe Library on-line catalogue. Here one can search for authors, titles, subjects.

Networking is important
The SEARCWL library aims at a close co-operation with the law libraries at the universities within the Women’s Law Programme, both regarding acquisitions and inter-library loans. Networking with relevant libraries and institutions elsewhere is also important, and the SEARCWL Library is a member of the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) – http://www.iall.org
